THE LODGER

The Browns have decided to let their spare room. They have advertised it in the local newspaper. A strange woman comes to see it.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: Good afternoon. I'm Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme.1 I've come in answer to your advertisement.

Jim: Oh... er... come in, Mrs. Orme.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme, if you don't mind. You’ve heard of me, of course.

Jim: Well, I'm afraid...

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: I'm the president2 of the Guild of Philosophical Spiritualists.3 I'm writing a book on philosophical spiritualism through the ages and I must have congenial surroundings4 for completing it. My present rooms are full of most unpleasant thought-waves.5

Maggie: Well… er ... perhaps you'd like to come upstairs.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: Before I do,6 I hope you won't mind my asking whether yours is a happy home.7

Maggie: Well, really!8

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: You see, I like living in a happy home. Any sign of dissension just prevents me from working.9 I'm very sensitive, you know.

Jim: I do think you ought to see the room before we go any further, Mrs. ... er... Orby-Inglefield.10

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: Ingoldsby-Orme! Very well.

Maggie: (showing the room) This is it.11 It's quite large, but I think you'll find it very warm when the fire's lit.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: The wallpaper wants12 changing, of course, and I don't know about13 having that carpet in here. There doesn't seem to be much cupboard room,14 either.

Maggie: Well...

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: But I'm sure you won't mind my using this cupboard in the hall. Of course, you'll have to turn out all these sheets and towels.

Maggie: Oh well, I don't know.

Jim: D'you mind15 if I smoke? I feel my nerves need soothing.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: My dear sir! I've no objection to your smoking downstairs, but please refrain from doing so on this floor. Augustus16 and I are very sensitive to smoke. Where is Augustus, by the way?17 I distinctly remember putting him18 on the lead19 and taking him with me this morning.

Maggie: You have a dog? I suppose he could sleep in the kitchen.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: Certainly not! Augustus hates being parted from me. Now, there was something else I had to remember to ask you. Oh yes, you won't have your radio on20 late? It's only by working at night that I attain21 perfect concentration and then of course the slightest sound disturbs me.

I think I'd better go

Maggie: You mean you'll be working rather late?

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: I usually stop typing by two o'clock, but sometimes, of course, I find myself going on all night.22

Jim: Well, Mrs. Oldsby-Orme...

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: Ingoldsby-Orme, if you please.23

Jim: Well, Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme. I have to tell you that we always have the radio late at night and I insist on smoking like a chimney all over the house, upstairs and downstairs.

Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme: It doesn't sound very suitable then. I think I'd better go. Besides, it seems to me I can feel some rather unpleasant thought-waves here as well.

Maggie: Well, good-bye. Thank you for coming. I'm sorry you didn't like the room. (Mrs. Ingoldsby-Orme leaves).

Jim: See what you've let us in for!

Maggie: Never mind, Jim. The next one may be better.
