THE LUNCHEON PARTY

Jim and Maggie have invited the headmaster of Jim's school to lunch. He has just arrived.

Headmaster: Good morning, Mrs. Brown. 'Morning, Brown. I hope I haven't delayed lunch. I've been walking to get up a good appetite.1

Maggie: I'm so glad you've been able to come here at last. We've been looking forward to seeing you in our new house.

We've been looking forward to seeing youin our new house

Headmaster: Tell me, how long have you been living here now?

Jim: Just over a year.

Headmaster; Well, it's obviously been keeping you busy.2 You did most of the decorating3 yourselves, didn't you?

Jim: We certainly did. But why are we standing nut in the hall? Let's go into the sitting-room. It'll be warmer in them (then go into the sitting-room). Oh! It's rather chilly in her

Maggie: Well, I'm afraid I haven't lit the fire.4 You see. I've been trying to light it all the morning, but the wind my have been in the wrong direction. The coal simply wouldn't burn.5

Headmaster: Never mind. We'll soon get warm6 with some of your delicious food inside us.

Jim: Shall I help you dish up7, Maggie?

Maggie: Well, I'm afraid lunch isn't quite ready yet. You sec, the meat hasn't cooked properly. It's been stewing for two hours, but it's still not quite tender. Perhaps another ten minutes...?

Headmaster: Of course, of course. We're in no hurry.

Jim: We'll have a drop of sherry while we're waiting. Hallo!8 It doesn't seem to be here.9 Maggie! What have you done with the sherry I keep in the sideboard?

Maggie: I've been using it for cooking. It's all gone.10

Headmaster: Oh, dear.

Jim: But that happened to be a very good sherry.11 I've been keeping it for a special occasion.

Maggie: Oh, I'm terribly sorry, Jim. I thought it was cooking sherry.12

Headmaster: Please don't worry my dear chap.13 I can very well do without.14

Jim: Well, I'm sorry I can't offer you a drink. Maggie, there's rather a funny smell coming from the kitchen.

Maggie: Good heavens! While I've been chatting with you the meat must have burnt (goes into the kitchen).

Headmaster: Oh, dear me.

Jim: (to Maggie, who has returned from the kitchen) Well; what was it, Maggie? Come and tell us. We won't eat you, even if the meat's spoilt.

Maggie: It's burnt to a cinder. I really don't know what's got into me.15 I've been planning all this week how to make this lunch a success,16 and now look what's happened.

Headmaster: Please don't upset yourself on my account,17 Mrs. Brown. I'm quite sure you've got some eggs or something in: the kitchen which will do just as well18 for our lunch.

Maggie: Well, I suppose I might make an omelet.

Headmaster: I've a much better idea. I’ll come into the kitchen and makes the omelet. I love cooking. You'll be doing me favour it you let me try.

Jim: And we'll trust you to break the eggs,19 Maggie.

Maggie: Jim!
