                                                         20.  AT SCHOOL

Zbyszek Karlowicz, a young man from Poland, has been invited to visit Jim's school. Jim is showing him round.

Jim: Where would you like to start? On this floor we have all the workrooms and the assembly hall. The classrooms are up stairs.

Zbyszek:  It's really very good of you taking all this trouble.

Jim: Not in the least. Being free this morning I can show you round  without upsetting the time-table.

Zbyszek:  Let's start off with the workrooms then.

Jim: Well then, this is the dressmaking room. There's no one using it at the moment,

Zbyszek: That evening dress hanging on the wall seems most professional.

Jim: Well, you should see some of the work our carpentry class turns out. This is the carpentry-room, Those boys working over there are making some props for our school-play.

Zbyszek: (sound of distant singing) What's that singing? Do you halve, music lessons at school as well?

It's really very good of you taking all this  trouble

Jim: Don't you recognize it?

Zbyszek: Well, yes... it sounds like our Polish „Mazowsze". Where's it coming from?

Jim: From the geography-room. I'll take you there right away. Er... by the way... talking of geography... I wondered whether you would like to meet one of our classes and tell them, something about Poland.  It isn't every day they have visitors from abroad.

Zbyszek: Well, that's a nice thing to do! Inviting me to look round your school and then setting me a trap  like this!

Jim: Well, supposing you just answered questions. That wouldn't be so difficult, would it?

Zbyszek:   But really, nit knowing the language...

Jim: But you speak English perfectly. Well, here we are, this is the geography-room. We've even got a map of Poland waiting for you.

Zbyszek: Well, when would you want me to do it? This afternoon?

Jim:   No, right away of course.

Zbyszek: You mean you want me to got up in front of all those children sitting in there? Why, there must be at leas eighty of them.

Jim:   It's two classes.   Poor chap, you look just like a ___ being led to the slaughter. Will it really be  such an order?   could show them lantern-slides  instead if you can't face

Zbyszek:  No, I'll do it.   I won't let you down, seeing you made all the arrangements.
