A VISIT TO BARBARA
Jane and Robert are visiting
their Polish friend Barbara and her husband in their new flat. Barbara: Come
in, Jane, come in, Robert. I'm so glad you were able to come. Andrzej is in the
bathroom washing nappies. He'll come out and be introduced in a minute.
Robert: Do Polish husbands help in the house? I thought they would be old-fashioned and insist
on being looked after by their
wives.1 At least that's what I've always been told.
Barbara: Well, things are changing. Nowadays, when wives go out to work,
some of the housework has to be taken over by the husband.
Robert: And I always believed that only English husbands helped their
wives.
Barbara: Well, Andrzej is rather unusual. In fact we're quite the most talked-about
couple2 in this block. You see, my exams are fairly soon, so
just lately he's been doing nearly all the work in the house and looking after
the baby as well. We can't afford to pay anyone, you see.
Jane: I should think3
not! In England only really rich people can afford servants these days.4
Barbara: And now I'm going to bring you some real English tea — with
milk.
Jane: Can we come and help you?
Barbara: Oh no, it's
all been attended to.5 It has to be brought in. That's all
(calls out) Andrzej. Tea is ready. Oh, there you are. Robert, Jane, this is
Andrzej.
Andrzej: How do you do?
Robert and Jane: How do you do?
Janе: These pastries look simply
delicious. Were they made by Andrzej as well?
Andrzej: Good heavens, no! What gave you that idea?6 I'm an architect, not a
baker.
Barbara: Some of this furniture was designed by him. Tell me, do you
like our flat?
Robert: Very much. Especially this room. It has that nice comfortable lived-in look7
without being overcrowded.

Andrzej: I'm glad you like it. We're very lucky, you know. This block is
an experimental one that was taken over and furnished by the Z.M.S. When we were allotted a flat8
here, we nearly went wild with
joy.9 It only has one disadvantage.
Jane: What's that?
Andrzej: It's been so much written about in the press that we have a
constant stream of visitors from
all over Poland10 asking to be shown round.
Jane: I hope you won't mind showing us round, too.
Barbara: Of course not. But after tea.
