A LEAK IN THE TANK
Mr. Dickson: Excuse me, but is this number 37 Laburnum1 Avenue?
Maggie: Yes, that's
right2. What
a good thing3 you've come so quickly. I have to keep on emptying the bowl4 under the leak
and I'm quite exhausted.
Mr. Dickson: Er... are you Mrs. Brown?
Maggie: Yes, of course. But haven't you got your tools with you? Never
mind, you'll find my husband's tool-kit upstairs. Come along with me. The tank
is up in the attic.
Mr. Dickson: Are you having some trouble with your tank?
Maggie: Yes, didn't I explain over the telephone5? It's sprung a leak6. We should have had it re-lined7
last year, when we first moved
in8.
Mr. Dickson: Have you turned
the water off at the main9?
Maggie: Yes, but the storage
tank10 in the attic holds forty gallons11.
Mr. Dickson: Well, I'll see what I can do.
Maggie: And, please, hurry
up12 if you can. We're having some people to supper this
evening and I can't do a thing13
without water.
Mr. Dickson: I'll do my
best14.
(enter Jim)
Jim: Hallo, Maggie! Have our visitors arrived yet?
Maggie: No, luckily they haven't. The tank in the attic's sprung a leak,
Jim. I rang the local
builder's15 and had them send a plumber round. Luckily he
came right away. He's having a
look at it16 now.
Jim: We should have had the tank mended last year. Now we'll probably
have to spend twice as much17.
Maggie: Yes, but we hadn't got the money then.
Jim: We must have all
the water pipes seen to18 this year, so that they don't
freeze up again if it's a cold winter.
Maggie: While we're
about it19, we
might as well have a new tank installed20. It probably won't
cost much more than having the old one re-lined.
Jim: Well, it's worth
keeping in mind21.
Maggie: There's a drop of water left in the kettle, Jim, sо you can have a cup of tea if you like. Go and take a
cup to the plumber as well. Oh, here he is already.
Jim: Good heavens, Dickson, are you the plumber?
Mr. Dickson: Well, it seems your wife thought so.
Jim: Maggie, you
featherbrained creature22! This is Mr. Dickson, our new science master23.
I asked him to come to supper this evening and meet the Greens.
Maggie: Well, you
should have told me24. I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Dickson. What
will you think of me! But why didn't you tell me you weren't the plumber?
Mr. Dickson: You didn't give me a chance25, you know, Mrs. Brown. But please don't worry. I've stopped up the leak26 in the tank for the time being27. You can have it fixed28 properly tomorrow.
