СЦЕНКА 10

THE ANNIVERSARY PRESENT

Maggie: 1How are you getting on with that digging, Harry?

Harry Jones: I've done 2about half, Mrs. Brown.

Maggie: Well, I'd like you to stop for a moment and come over here. 3There's something I want you to help me with.

Harry: What do you want me to do, Mrs. Brown?

Maggie: I've decided 4to get rid of those ugly rhododendrons, and I'd like you 5to help me dig them out.

Harry: Rhododendron roots are awfully tough. Shouldn't we wait for Mr. Brown to come home? I could do the job with him.

Maggie: But 6he mustn't know about it. 7It's to be a surprise. 8By the time he comes home 9I want us to have dug up all the bushes and planted something else in their place.

Harry: What are you going to put in then?

Maggie: I asked Mrs. Eccles next door to let me have some 10cuttings from her roses.

Harry: 11Will you get them to grow in this heavy soil?

Maggie: Oh, I expect so. The 12nursery advised me to try lilies, but I've always wanted roses in my garden.

Jim: (calls out) Maggie! Are you out in the garden?

Maggie: Yes! Just coming darling! (to Harry) I'll have to go in now, but 13it won't take you much longer to finish the job, will it? I'll come out and plant the rose cuttings later, after 14tea.

Jim: Has Harry been working in the garden, Maggie? I hope you told him not to water the cucumbers again.

Maggie: Yes, I did. I've been helping Harry, and we've got a surprise for you.

Jim: Well, there's coincidence, because I've got a surprise for you too A first anniversary present for our house.

Maggie: How lovely. Jim! I didn't expect you to remember. What is it?

Jim: Well, you've asked me several times to 15do something about that rhododendron hedge 16at the bottom of the garden, so today 17I called at the nursery and bought these.

Maggie: Six more rhododendron plants!

Jim: Yes, it'll look much better when there are more bushes down there, don't you think? Not so straggly. Now what about your surprise, Maggie?

Maggie: Er... I think it had better wait till after tea. Yes, Jim, 18it had definitely better wait till after tea.

I've got a surprise for you
